Beans: the honest explanation

Beans contain raffinose and stachyose, sugars built from units your digestive system has no enzyme to separate. Humans simply do not produce alpha-galactosidase. So the sugars travel intact to the colon, where bacteria are delighted to find them, and the by-products are hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

The traditional fixes work for a real reason. Soaking dried beans and throwing away the soaking water removes a portion of these sugars before they ever reach your plate. Rinsing tinned beans does the same on a smaller scale. And supplements containing alpha-galactosidase supply the missing enzyme directly, breaking the sugars down in the small intestine where they can be absorbed.

Lactose: the one that does not adapt

Most of the world's adults produce less lactase after childhood. Undigested lactose reaches the colon, ferments, and produces gas along with cramping and often looser stools. The distinguishing feature is the tight timing — symptoms follow dairy reliably, usually within a couple of hours.

Unlike fibre, this does not improve with exposure. The enzyme does not come back because you persevered. Hard cheeses and yoghurt are usually better tolerated because much of the lactose is already gone.

Sugar alcohols: the sneaky one

Sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol and erythritol appear in sugar-free gum, mints, protein bars and diet products. They are poorly absorbed by design — that is what makes them low-calorie — which means they arrive in the colon largely intact.

People who would never suspect a stick of gum can chew through a packet in a working day and consume a meaningful dose. If your gas has no obvious dietary explanation, this is the first place to look.

Cruciferous vegetables: both problems at once

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts bring fermentable fibre and sulphur-containing glucosinolates in the same mouthful. Fibre: worse before better

Increasing fibre reliably increases gas at first. The difference from the other entries here is that this one genuinely settles: gut bacterial populations shift over weeks and the effect diminishes. Raising fibre gradually rather than overnight gives that adaptation a chance to keep up.

What to do with this

Eliminating everything on this list would leave you with a joyless diet and no information. The useful approach is narrower: remove one suspect at a time for a couple of weeks and see whether anything changes. Do probiotics help?

For the swallowed-air portion, yes. Eating quickly, talking while eating, drinking through a straw and chewing gum all increase how much air goes down. It will not touch the fermentation side at all.
Why does the same meal affect me and not my partner?
Different gut bacterial populations, different enzyme levels, different transit times. Individual variation here is genuinely large, and it is not a sign that one of you is doing something wrong.
Is more gas a sign of a healthy gut?
